Supporting you on your holistic pelvic health journey

Bladder Issues:

Leaking, frequency, and urges are common bladder symptoms treated by pelvic floor therapy. This can be extremely isolating and impact you socially. You don’t have to live with leakage with laughing or rushing to the bathroom multiple times a day!

Pelvic & Low Back Pain:

Understanding and addressing our nervous system is key when working with chronic pain. Our body tends to go into movement patterns to feel safe and comfortable which can lead to muscle imbalances in our pelvis.

Pregnancy and Postpartum:

Pelvic floor therapy can help with posture to improve back pain, strengthening for leakage & core stability, encourage safe/active lifestyles plus much more before, during, and after childbirth. Additional focus on coping skills for adjusting to new routines & prioritizing YOUR preparation & recovery.

Proactive Pelvic Health:

What if you understood proper breathing techniques and ways to prevent leakage or pelvic pain before even becoming pregnant? Learn how to integrate functional cycle tracking into monthly routines across the lifespan to prepare for different seasons of life.

Colorectal Conditions:

Constipation, IBS, Hemorrhoids (to name a few) can be addressed from a holistic lens: addressing your daily habits and nervous system to get to the root cause of your symptoms.

Pelvic Floor Connection:

Do you have trouble “feeling” your pelvic floor muscles? You’re not alone! Most women have not been taught the correct way to contract (kegel) and relax their pelvic floor. Coordination of these muscles is so important for a healthy bladder, bowel, and intimacy!

Don’t let changes to your pelvic health hold you back from reaching your health & wellness goals!

Testimonials

Karla was able to help me greatly improve my mobility. I’ve struggled with several different varieties of lower back and hip pain over the years. I’ve seen doctors and chiropractors and have made little progress. Karla listened to the types of issues I was facing and gave me simple things to do at home to help improve mobility and functionality. The progress I’ve made in such a short period of time has been very promising. I’m currently pregnant and she’s already provided insight on how to prepare myself for postnatal care.
— Danae, 33
Karla helped me to better understand pelvic floor function and breathing exercises to enhance my prenatal care. She is super responsive and willing to connect with me in incorporating more of my self care into everyday living. I felt I could trust her with discussing intimate questions.
— Alissa, 30

Prioritize Your Pelvic Health

I teach active women about their pelvic health!

If you’re like me, you may have went through high school with minimal education regarding the changes that occur within our bodies—let alone our pelvic floor! If health class was where we began to learn about our anatomy, changes through puberty, and intimacy —then what happens after high school?

When are we suppose to learn that you don’t have to live with severe period pain, or that you don’t have to leak urine when you run and play with your kids, or that intimacy doesn’t have to be painful!

What if you learned ways to connect to and nourish your pelvic floor BEFORE you got pregnant? How confident would you feel after giving birth?

What if you’re pregnant and you learned ways to decrease your back pain and engage your core properly?

It’s time to make women’s health a priority—and I’m here to help you on your pelvic health journey!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pelvic floor occupational therapy is a specialized area of occupational therapy that focuses on the evaluation and treatment of conditions related to the pelvic floor and the impact it has on your daily routines, habits, and roles (as a student, wife, friend, mother, etc). I specialize in how your daily occupations (self care routines, sleep, work, leisure, education, play, social participation, and health management) are impacted by your pelvic floor dysfunction. We work together to identify barriers you have to living a more fulfilling life and incorporate strategies to improve your pelvic health.

  • Occupelvic Health and Wellness offers cash based services. When you go through insurance for occupational therapy, the insurance company dictates the treatment plan. This means that your insurance company gets to determine what treatments you are and aren’t allowed to receive, how much time you are allowed to see me for each session, how may sessions you are allowed to have, and what symptoms/issues are allowed to be addressed. A cash-based model allows me to do what is best for you during your treatment without having to get approval from your insurance company. This means I can spend one-on-one time with you to:

    -address multiple problems at once

-You can choose your own goals

-We can schedule 60+ minute sessions to address your body holistically

Virtual sessions are considered wellness based calls as they are consultative and not completing a formal in person assessment.

  • 1 in 3 women will have some sort of pelvic floor dysfunction within their lifespan. It is much more common than you think–we can work together to:

—Address abdominal & pelvic floor strength

—Stop leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising

—Control your bladder on the way to the bathroom and go less often

—Get control of distressing bowel symptoms such as urgency and constipation

    —Have pain-free intercourse

—Pregnancy and Postpartum: exercise routines to improve bladder/bowel issues, body mechanics, ergonomic setup in nursery, core strength, stress & pain management

—Difficulty connecting or “feeling”your pelvic floor muscles

    - & much more!

  • During an in-home therapy session, the Initial Evaluation begins with a discussion to understand your specific needs, goals, and any relevant medical history. This initial conversation helps to tailor the session to your individual circumstances.

Next, I will guide you through a functional movement assessment. This may involve observing your movement patterns, assessing your posture, and discussing any symptoms you are experiencing, such as pain, incontinence, or discomfort. I may ask you to demonstrate certain movements or exercises to better understand your situation. Sometimes we may need a different approach and addressing mental health concerns and relationships with yourself or others may take precedence.

Based on the assessment findings, I will introduce specific strategies and exercises designed to meet your needs. This may include pelvic floor muscle training, breathing techniques, and body awareness practices. I will provide clear instructions and modifications as needed to ensure you are comfortable and able to perform the exercises correctly.

Throughout the session, I will encourage open communication, inviting you to share your feelings about the exercises or any discomfort you might experience. It’s important that you feel at ease as we work together.

As the session concludes, we will discuss a home practice plan that you can follow between our visits. This plan will include personalized exercises and tips to help you integrate the techniques into your daily routine. Lastly, we will schedule the next session, ensuring continuity in your therapy.

The goal of in-home therapy is to create a supportive environment where you can feel comfortable discussing your concerns and making progress toward your pelvic health goals.

An internal or external assessment of the pelvic floor anatomy is optional. I will show you on a pelvis model what this can look like should you decide if this is something you wish to explore. We will make sure you feel comfortable and always have the option to stop the exam. Your voice and choice is always at the forefront of our session.

  • On a secure video platform, We will discuss what brings you on your pelvic health journey. I will ask you questions about your routines related to your bowel and bladder habits, sexual intimacy, frequent stressors in your life, among others. I am very passionate about body literacy-and understanding our bodies in order to heal! I want to teach you ways YOU can embrace your body and facilitate healing.
